How to measure lawn square footage
- Type the property address and switch to the satellite view
- Click around the edge of the grass, one area at a time: front, back, sides
- Skip the house, driveway, patio, pool and planting beds
- Add the areas up; the tool fills the square footage into the calculator
Why square footage matters
Mowing, fertilizer, aeration, overseeding and sod are all priced by area. One measurement answers all of them. A typical US suburban lot has 5,000 to 10,000 square feet of turf; quarter-acre lots often reach 8,000.
Measuring with Google Maps instead
Google Maps has a "Measure distance" tool that can outline an area on desktop, but it reports the whole polygon and takes several clicks per yard. This tool is built for lawns: trace, add the next area, done. Read how to measure a lawn from the satellite map for tips on trees, slopes and old images.
